Plzeň-based Doosan to complete gas-fired power plant in Kazakhstan with Turkey’s AKSA

Doosan Škoda Power, a major global turbine manufacturer, will build a gas-fired power plant in Kyzylorda, Kazakhstan, with Turkish energy company AKSA Energy. The combined heat and power plant will burn natural gas and is due to be completed next year. Kazakhstan’s energy sector has so far been dominated by coal-fired power plants. The shift to natural gas represents a major step towards more sustainable energy, and the Kyzylorda power plant is set to play a key role in this transformation, Natálie Sedláčková, a media representative for Plzeň-based Doosan, told the Czech News Agency today. Neither party disclosed the value of the contract.
According to Sedláčková, leading Turkish energy company AKSA Energy has entered into a strategic partnership with Doosan Škoda Power to accelerate the plant’s completion. Once completed, the combined heat and power plant will have a total installed capacity of 240 MW, helping meet growing demand for electricity and heat in the Kazakh city, which has nearly 250.000 residents.
“We are the first direct foreign investor in Kazakhstan’s energy sector, and therefore see securing energy supplies as a priority. We will achieve efficiency by optimising resources and using the most advanced technologies in the 240 MW combined heat and power plant,” said AKSA Energy project manager Algan Saracoglu.
According to Sedláčková, the cleaner and more efficient energy source is in line with national sustainability and environmental protection goals, including achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2060. Jindřich Závodný, Doosan’s project manager, said the engineering company’s third project in Kazakhstan demonstrates its growing market share in the country. “The project follows the Karabatan 2 x 56 MW project and the Turkestan 2 x 175 MW project,” he said.
Delivery of the 95 MW Plzeň-made steam turbine and associated equipment is planned for the third quarter of this year. Doosan Škoda Power has already worked with AKSA Energy to supply and install two 135 MW turbines in Turkey.
Plzeň-based Doosan, whose turbines operate in 63 countries worldwide, exports up to 90 percent of its output. Its annual revenue reaches nearly five billion crowns. The engineering company, with more than a century of history and nearly a tenth of the global steam turbine market, manufactures and supplies equipment with capacities ranging from three to 1200 megawatts. Its turbines are used in combined-cycle gas, coal, nuclear, cogeneration and solar power plants, as well as biomass incineration plants.
