Teplárny Brno announces end of heating season. Winter was slightly colder than last year
Due to weather developments, Teplárny Brno is ending the heating season today. The company announced this in a press release. The municipal district heating utility had already suspended heat supplies to Brno households, institutions and businesses on 7 May, but resumed them five days later due to colder weather.
"This spring brought several more pronounced cold spells, which led us to resume heat supplies after their temporary suspension. However, the weather forecast now confirms more stable warming, and we are therefore definitively ending the heating season. The shutdown of heat supplies will take place gradually during Thursday and Friday," said Petr Fajmon, CEO of Teplárny Brno.
The heating season that is now ending began on 24 September last year and, including the resumed heat supplies in May, lasted 234 days. This is in line with the average of 236 days. Heat consumption, however, was somewhat higher this year.
"The average temperature during the heating season was 7.2 degrees Celsius, approximately 0.3 degrees lower than last year, which translated into higher consumption. Expected heat sales for the period from September 2025 to May 2026 total approximately 3.2 million GJ, around three percent more year on year and at the same time the highest figure of the past four heating seasons," added Chief Financial Officer Přemysl Měchura.
For the first time in a long while, the district heating utility recorded more significant frosts this year. In January, the average monthly temperature reached 1.9 degrees Celsius below zero, the first time since 2019 that the average temperature of any month had fallen below zero.
The heating period set by a decree of the Ministry of Industry and Trade runs from September to May, with its start and end depending on the average daily temperature. Heat supplies are suspended or ended after the average daily temperature rises above 13 degrees for two consecutive days and, based on weather developments, no drop in outdoor temperatures is expected. The utility resumes supplies if the average daily temperature falls below 13 degrees for two consecutive days and meteorologists do not forecast rising temperatures for the following day.
The current weather forecast for South Moravia expects morning lows between eight and 13 degrees Celsius, while afternoon highs could climb to as much as 29 degrees Celsius over the weekend.
